It had been an eventful morning, Nia sneaking out before dawn to meet Saro in the port, where he’d joyfully promised her a surprise. Eager to know what exactly this surprise entailed, the young noblewoman had dressed herself swiftly in a simple kalasiris of white linen, not even bothering with shoes or any other sort of adornment in her haste to leave the house. Luckily, it was not a far walk from Hei Sheifa’s Cairo home to the port, so it was only a matter of minutes before she arrived.
Greeting her lover with a kiss, Nia was all bright smiles and radiance as she ran her fingers through his hair. Hardly before she even had the time to get two words out, he was pulling out a blindfold and ushering her onto his ship, the woman following him with somewhat bewildered steps. It wasn’t that she didn’t trust him because of course she did, but this was all a bit unprecedented. Where exactly was he taking her?
However, she did love his little elements of showmanship, so she didn’t protest when the cloth was wrapped around her eyes. Somehow, he’d managed to secure the ship for just the two of them, and that only made her even more excited. He was taking her somewhere new and they were going alone? Every moment only increased her anticipation, her heart pounding in her eagerness to learn where it was they were headed. Wherever it was, she had no doubt she would love it; after all, anywhere was better than here.
“Won’t you even give me a hint of where we’re going?” Nia tried to wheedle it out of him as they prepared to leave the dock, carefully seating herself toward the bow of the ship where she wouldn’t get in the way. Blindfolded, she’d be even more useless than normal, and she didn’t want to risk tripping and falling overboard. “Just a tiny one?”
She doubted he would, and part of her didn’t even really want him to. In the end, she knew it would be much more exciting if he didn’t, but Nia was a curious woman by nature. She loved surprises, but at the same time, she was dying to know where they were headed. Saro certainly had a flair for the adventurous, and it was a large part of what drew her in so strongly. These past few weeks spent with the sailor had only endeared her that much more, and he had promised this surprise would snare her heart forever.
But gods above, what was it?!

But gods above, what was it?!
Saro had been enjoying himself with Nia during his time in Egypt. Did he truly believe himself when he said he was there to stay? Absolutely not, though she was beautiful, and they got along well, and he truly did feel for her, he didn’t think he felt enough to keep him tied to Egypt forever. And she didn’t seem entirely keen on taking on the life of a pirate, sailing the seas for the rest of her life. Their relationship had an expiry date, and Saro didn’t know when that was, but it would happen eventually, and he would move on to the next lands and leave her behind. She would get over him, they always did.
For now, though, he would continue to woo her, to enjoy her company and act as the ever-faithful lover. Currently he was waiting for her at the docks, a small sloop at his command, a ship small enough that he could operate it himself on a lazy voyage down the Nile to the intended destination. The ship didn’t technically belong to him, but it’s previous owner was long dead and gone, so it wasn’t as if he was about to fight Saro’s claim to it. None of which Nia needed to know, she could keep on believing the ship was truly his.
She finally arrived, and after a quick greeting, Saro was blindfolding her and ushering her forward, knowing that the element of surprise would make the small adventure much more romantic for her. She seemed to trust him well enough, and he got her onto the ship with out any tripping or fumbling.
He helped her walk so she didn’t trip, grinning as she asked for a hint.
“Absolutely not my love. You will find out when we get there.” He said softly, pressing a gentle kiss to her lips, letting it linger for a moment before pulling away. He got to work preparing the ship to sail, smoothly pulling away from the docks as they began their journey on the river, towards Alexandria. It wasn’t far, but it would make at least a day trip for the two of them and would give Nia a sense of adventure. She seemed to love the stories of all the places Saro had been, and so he thought he would do his best to bring a little piece of that to her.
When the ship was set on his course, he headed to where she sat, taking her hand, he pulled her up to stand.
“I want my lady at my side as I sail, come.” He spoke, his hand still in hers, he lead her carefully over to the wheel so he could give her attention while still being able to make adjustments when needed.
He pulled her in close once they were where he needed them to be, arms wrapped around her middle.
“You are the epitome of radiance.” He said softly, touching her cheek gently with one hand. He wondered if she would attempt to remove her blindfold at all, or if she would keep in on the whole sail.

That was essentially the response she had expected, but she pouted at him, nonetheless. Of course, she couldn’t see his reaction while she was blindfolded, so she simply leaned back with her arms crossed over her chest in a mock display of sullenness. She wasn’t upset; she knew he wouldn’t tell her. But coyness was in her very nature, and she was sure he expected nothing less from her.
The briny scent of the river wafted under her nose as they embarked, Nia turning her face to the smell as the wind their passage created tangled playful fingers through her hair. The breeze broke up some of the heat; though it was only morning, Egyptian summers were unfailingly brutal. Already, the temperatures soared enough that sweat gathered on her brow, so she was thankful for the movement of the ship to keep the worst of the heat at bay.
Nia felt her heart flutter when Saro came to fetch her, guiding her toward the helm and pulling her in close. Lush lips curved in a pleased smirk, her hand reaching up to cover his where it rested on her cheek. She was touched that he wanted her beside him instead of off to the side; so many people in her life made her feel that she was always in the way, and it was refreshing that he was not the same. He seemed to genuinely enjoy her company, seeking her out as often as he could. And when they were together… gods, it was like a fire flaring to life.
Truthfully, she was falling for Saro, and every day or night they spent together only cemented it that much more. He was handsome, charming, funny, and he doted on her like she was a goddess come to earth, and truly, what more could a woman ask for? His comment on her radiance brought a light flush to her cheeks, her smirk deepening. How could she resist a man who so constantly lavished her with praise?
“I would say the same about you, but you blindfolded me before I could even appreciate that gorgeous smile of yours,” she teased, turning in his grasp and carefully reaching out for where she thought his face must be. Light fingertips caressed over his cheekbones to pause at his mouth, before her other hand wound in his hair. With a gentle tug, she pulled his head toward her, her lips instinctually connecting with his.
She let the kiss linger for several long moments, an undercurrent of hunger roiling between them. If it were not for the fact that he was the only one controlling the ship, her hands would be a bit more adventurous, reaching beneath his tunic and encouraging him below deck for a rather different type of adventure. But these things could wait until they docked; nothing killed the mood like suddenly running ashore because no one was manning the sails.
Finally, she broke away with an appreciative little purr, her body flush against his. “Two things,” she murmured, her hands idly caressing whatever parts of him they could reach. “One, how long will we be sailing? And two…” she laughed, tapping the cloth bound over her eyes. “Must I wear this until we get there?”

Saro chuckled into the kiss as he was pulled into it, gladly moving his lips with hers in a moment of pure passion. She made his heart soar, like a sail put into the wind, in her presence his usual thoughts of love lost faded away to nearly nothing. He could almost see himself loving her. Almost.
“We will be sailing for a while yet, and no, you need not keep the blindfold on until then. Though… I am rather enjoying the fact that I could do anything to you right now, and you wouldn’t see to coming…” He said in a mischievous tone. Suddenly he swept her to the side, dipping her nearly to the ground, though he kept her from falling by keeping his arms around her. He pressed a kiss to her lips, swinging them both upright as he did so. When the kiss broke, he laughed and let go of her, carefully taking her blindfold off, he tossed the piece of cloth aside.
“Welcome to a little slice of the sailor’s life.” He said, chuckling a bit, he moved away just enough to grab the helm and adjust their course, pausing as he did so.
“Come here, put your hand on the handles, here and here.” He said, guiding her hands to the wheel as he spoke. He moved to stand behind her, hands overtop of hers as he helped her steer the ship, correcting their course as the river slightly narrowed and turned the smallest bit.
“You’d make for an amazing pirate wife.” Saro leaned in and whispered to her before placing a kiss on her neck. She spoke of wanting to adventure, but the odds of her ever actually taking to a life at sea were slim. Or at least he thought so.
He pulled away from her to go and adjust the sails, raising them just a bit to catch less wind, he wanted their journey to take a little time, to extend it so it seemed like more of an adventure to her and less of a quick trip down the river. When everything was adjusted and tied off once more, he moved back towards her, taking her in his arms, he spun her around before placing her back on her feet.
“Tell me of your time spent since I last saw you. I want to hear every detail of what the most beautiful woman in Egypt was doing while her love was off procuring a ship to whisk her away with.” He said, keeping his arms wrapped around her as they talked. He genuinely liked to spend time with her, but he did not see things as permanent between them. As amazing as she was, his heart still ached too much for him to truly commit to another.

Truth be told, Nia wouldn’t mind that much, either, her mind positively reeling with the possibilities. The smile that spread over her lips mirrored Saro’s, opening her mouth to reply before she was suddenly dipped back. Her gasp was quickly silenced with another kiss, a purr of contentment rumbling in her throat as her fingers tangled in his hair. I could get used to this, she thought with a muffled laugh, returning the kiss with as much ardor as he gave. Just as suddenly as she was swept back, she was on her feet again, the blindfold torn from her eyes and tossed aside.
Blinking the sudden light from her eyes, Nia’s smile widened at the sight of her lover, watching as he grabbed the wheel and adjusted their course. Her face was full of surprised delight when he instructed her to grab the handles, carefully taking hold where he indicated and leaning back against him as he placed his hands over top of hers. Though he was doing the real work, she appreciated the sentiment, letting him take the lead while inwardly pretending it was her work alone.
You’d make for an amazing pirate wife.
Feeling the brush of Saro’s lips against her neck, Nia turned to catch his gaze with another smile. Gods, if only. “Hell, I’d make an amazing pirate, not just a wife,” she quipped, stealing a quick kiss. What she wouldn’t give for such a life, free on the open sea without duty or obligation, just the wind and sea. It was a pretty fantasy, but she doubted it would ever be more than that. The choice simply wasn’t hers to make.
These were things she didn’t say, however. She wanted to preserve the fantasy for as long as she could.
Giggling when she was lifted and spun, Nia clung to Saro’s shoulders as he placed her back down. He was full of such gestures—always quick to show affection, even to the point where it was a little over the top, but the young lady of Hei Sheifa loved every minute of it. Who wouldn’t swoon over such a handsome man constantly showing his adoration?
“Every detail?” Nia repeated with a playful raise of her brow and a rueful shake of her head. “I assure you, my darling Saro, I wasn’t doing anything quite so interesting as procuring a ship.” Looking around said ship, it took only a few moments without the blindfold to realize it wasn’t the ship he’d brought her aboard their first night together. “Speaking of… how did you procure this ship?” Was this another he’d had sitting in the port somewhere that he hadn’t told her about? Had he borrowed it from someone else? Or had he obtained it through more questionable methods?

Though… I am rather enjoying the fact that I could do anything to you right now, and you wouldn’t see it coming…

Saro laughed a little as she came back at him and said she’s make an amazing pirate, not just a wife. It was that sort of fire that had attracted him to her. Sure she was beautiful, but she had a personality so different from any woman that looked like her. Typically they were self centred, their world revolved around the fact that they were absolutely gorgeous, but with Nia, her soul burned with something else. Something more attractive than even her outward looks. If it would have actually worked, he might have swept her off with him. But in the end, he did not think her truly suited for a life at sea. Few people were.
His grin was sheepish as she asked how he had procured the ship, a glint of mischief in his eyes.
“It’s probably better for both of us if you don’t know.” He said simply, hoping that she wouldn’t dig further. The exact details of what he had done to relieve the owner of his ship would likely ruin the mood of their little adventure down the Nile. Another reality of his life that she wouldn’t likely be able to handle.
He took his hands from hers upon the wheel, letting her decide if hers would remain or not. The river and its currents were fairly straight at the moment, so he wasn’t too worried about either of them steering. Their destination wasn’t far now, and they could spend some time on land before they made their way back where they had come from. He would have her back home for the night, though she didn’t seem to like spending much time at home.
“Have you managed to guess our destination yet?” He asked, knowing the city would be in their view soon, and she should know at that point where it was they were going. He knew it wasn’t far, but for someone who didn’t travel to all sorts of faraway lands, the trip would likely be an exciting one. The efforts in procuring the ship and sailing the Nile would be well worth it to see the happiness on her face.
“Look. There.” He said, as the city began coming into view, he pointed over to it, it was rather breath taking to see the buildings coming into view in the distance, he had to admit. He had seen many beautiful sights in his life, and this was one of them. Egypt had it’s charms, and he wasn’t immune to them. He was sure that he would never get tired of such views as long as he lived.
“Are you ready to help me bring the ship to port? I’ll need your assistance.” He said, though he could do it on his own, letting her help would at least give her a bit of a thrill, and he would put her on jobs that weren’t overly important, not that she needed to know that part. They would bring the ship in for a smooth docking and she would feel excited for the part she played in doing so, no matter how small.

Nia lifted a brow at the vagueness of his answer, but she said nothing. If he didn’t want to tell her how he’d gotten the ship, he didn’t have to; his lack of explanation said enough. No doubt he’d come by it in a less than honorable way, and while that didn’t particularly bother her, she also didn’t need to know the details. She’d just let her imagination fill in the gaps.
When Saro lifted his hands away, she let hers remain on the wheel—nervous that if she let go, the ship would decide its own course. Nia knew little of sailing, after all; how was she was supposed to know what would happen? While she also doubted he’d really leave her in control of the vessel, she didn’t want to take any chances. What if they ran aground?
Have you managed to guess our destination yet?
At that, Nia shook her head, glancing curiously over at her lover, who then directed her attention to the buildings coming into view. Eyes widening in delight, a broad smile broke over her face. It wasn’t a place she recognized, though she supposed she could take a wild guess just based on the short duration of the journey alone. She knew it wasn’t Thebes, but Giza perhaps? Alexandria? Wherever it was, she’d find out soon enough.
Even if it wasn’t anywhere particularly exotic, it made her happy just to be going somewhere that wasn’t Cairo. She was an adventurous girl at heart, though her position in society often prevented her from being able to act on it. The fact that Saro had taken a day to bring her somewhere, even just somewhere within Egypt, served to further soften her heart in his favor. Underneath all that bluster, there beat the heart of a thoughtful man, and it was in that moment she knew she wanted this to be more than just a brief fling. Maybe she was even in love.
Are you ready to help me bring the ship to port? I’ll need your assistance.
Her smile only widened at that, responding with an enthusiastic nod. What she could really do, she didn’t know; it wasn’t like she’d spent much time on a ship. Even in her time with Lukos, he hadn’t really asked her to do much beyond the obvious, so on this, she was very much in the dark. But whatever she could do, she would, and she’d do it with a smile on her face.
“Absolutely!” was her cheery reply, dark eyes glittering joyously. “Just show me what I need to do!”

Saro grinned as Nia seemed excited at his idea of her helping him bring the ship in to port. He thought it would be something she enjoyed. He took her hand and lead her over towards a set of ropes by the small main sail. The ship wasn’t a large one, and as such it had been guided down the river by the currents and the wind rather than anyone rowing as a lot of Greek and Egyptian ships were. He guided her hand to a rope.
“Hold this, tightly. I’m going to undo the knot and then we are going to pull. This will raise the sail and bring us to a slower speed so we do not hit the port.” He stated, waiting for her to grab on before he moved to undo the complicated knot with a practised ease. He quickly gripped the rope, unsure if she could hold onto it without losing it by herself. He made sure his grip was good, standing behind her, he began to pull, doing most of the work but making sure to let her put effort in as well so she would feel useful. When the sail was up, Saro tied the rope off in a different spot this time. The ship began to slow without the power of the wind behind it.
“Perfect.” He grinned, and gave her a wink.
“This way.” He stated, leading her over to a large and heavy piece of stone that was carefully placed in a woven net and tied with a rope.
“We use this to stop the ship, and hold it in place as we tie it to the port.” He stated, knowing she would not be able to lift the anchor on her own, he barely could so she had no chance.
“I will toss this when the time is right, and I need you to go to the wheel. Hold it perfectly straight, it will attempt to move to the side from the weight of the anchor, you need to keep it straight or the ship will veer and hit the docks.” He said, pulling her in for a quick kiss before giving her a grin.
“You’ve got this.” He said before he let her go so she could make her way to wheel. He was exaggerating greatly on the ships pull, once again making an attempt to make her feel like she was actually helpful. It wasn’t that she wasn’t helpful, but it was definitely all something that Saro could have done on his own. He figured she knew that, but could take a little joy in ignoring that and feeling like she was a sailor at least for awhile.
Saro bent down to grab the stone, his arms wrapping around it, he lifted it, arms straining under the weight and held it at the side, ready to toss it as they approached the city. The docks weren’t busy yet, which was a good thing considering Nia was now in charge of the wheel.
“Turn us in, towards the right side of that dock!” He shouted over to her, sure that she would be able to handle the task. Once she had the ship facing the right way, Saro counted to five and then tossed the rock overboard. It made a splash and began to sink to the bottom, the weight of the stone slowing the ship. It landed on the bottom and the ship came to a stop with a small jerk beside the dock. Saro wasted no time in heading over to tie the ship to the port so they could spend their day in this new city.

Nia made sure to follow Saro’s instructions to the letter, pulling and steering and tying where directed. Turning the wheel at his behest so they could proper moor the ship, the young Egyptian’s focus was momentarily distracted at the sight of her lover lifting the anchor—the muscles gathering and bunching in his back in a way that nearly made her drool. Momentarily transfixed, her lips parted and her gaze focused in, eyes darkening before her mouth tilted in a smirk. Not only was Saro a thoughtful man, he was mouthwateringly gorgeous, and she could watch him perform physical labor all day long without complaint.
Waiting until they were properly docked before yanking her attention away and releasing the wheel, Nia joined her lover at the head of the ship where he was securing the ties to hold the ship in place. Riding the exhilaration of dipping her hands into the world of sailing, she laughed and jumped onto his back, leaving a trail of kisses that travelled up his neck. Limbs wrapped around him like a monkey, she grinned and kissed his cheek, her excitement palpable. New places, new people, new experiences… all of that and more served to make her heart soar.
“You’re a jewel, you know that?” she murmured in his ear, lightly nuzzling right below it. Her tone was warm, her voice low and velvety. “There are very few people in my life who’ve ever gone out of their way for me like this. I…” She squeezed him a little around his chest, dropping a kiss in the bend between his neck and shoulder before settling her chin there. “Thank you. For making me feel like I matter.”
For a long, poignant moment, Nia simply rested against his back, briefly claiming the sun-kissed warmth of his skin for her own. Smiling again, she kissed the back of his neck before squeezing her knees around his waist as if she were riding a horse. Lightening the mood, she declared in an effusive voice, “Now, onward! We’ve places to visit and sights to see! No more wasting time!”
Her laughter echoed off the surrounding water as she jumped off his back, grabbing his hand instead to tug him after her. Not even waiting for help in disembarking, she scrambled onto the deck and looked behind her with playful impatience. “You coming or what?”

Saro didn’t notice Nia starting at him as he worked, busy focusing on making sure he didn’t drop the anchor on his foot or drop it too early in the water or anything like that. He knew he was good looking, or at least he thought so, and his variety of past lovers seemed to agree with that fact. He wasn’t overly muscular like some men, but he was lean, and he was strong from a life spent working hard, lifting and pulling and sailing and fighting. He was by no means out of shape, whether or not he was as bulky as some men.
Saro laughed as Nia jumped on his back and placed kisses upon his skin. He finished up his night properly to make sure the ship wouldn’t sail off without them or sail into the docks and sink itself while they were off exploring Alexandria. He reached to grip her legs with his hands, to help make sure she didn’t fall off his back as he listened to her thanking him for taking the time to take her here. To Saro this was far from an adventure, a short sail to the next town over was nothing, and he had been to Alexandria many times. But to Nia, as he had thought, this was a whole big adventure and was far more exciting than it was for him.
“You do matter.” he said simply, and he wasn’t lying. At first his compliments and such had been an attempt to get her to bed, but as he spent more time with her he found he truly cared for her. Would that be enough to keep him from sailing off again someday in the near future? Not likely. But she didn’t need to know that, they could simply enjoy the time they did have together and it would be a nice memory to reflect on in the years to come.
He laughed again and let her legs go as she moved to slide off his back, gladly letting her take his hand, the two of them climbed off the ship and onto the docks, and he followed along beside her. He would let her lead the way, let her decide where she wanted to go and what she wanted to see. This was her day, whether she knew it or not, he would dedicate his time to what ever she wanted to do.
“So tell me, where is it we’re going? What do you want to do with our day?” He asked, as he took her hand in his again, lacing their fingers together so they were walking hand in hand, at least for the moment. Saro rather enjoyed sweet little romantic signs of affection such as this. Like he would be lost without her hand in his.
“What have you always wanted to do when you’ve thought of coming to Alexandria?” the pirate asked, hoping to inspire some ideas in her so she would be able to figure out what she wanted to do easier.

You do matter.
Those words were like music to her ears, words that she so rarely heard, at least from the mouths that mattered. Aside from her brother, she often felt a stranger in her own family, and most of her friends were flighty, at best. Her lovers came and went like the tide, and those few that had remained didn’t count for much.
But Saro was different. Saro kept coming back to her again and again, even when she was sure he would leave her for the call of the sea. Yet, somehow he didn’t, seemingly as entranced with her as she was with him. Even if he wasn’t necessarily a man she could bring home to meet her parents, he was becoming a constant in her life as the weeks went on. How novel it was to have someone she could rely on, someone who listened and spoke to her as if she was a real person instead of a doll. She wasn’t sure if it was something she could ever get used to.
Even as they strode off down the dock, hand-in-hand amongst light chatter and titillating banter, her mind kept returning to that simple phrase. You do matter. Even if she only mattered to a handful of people, it was something—something that gave her a purpose and a reason to smile. It seemed Saro gave her lots of reasons to smile, especially the more time that went on.
Browsing the wares of Alexandria’s sprawling market, her attention kept getting drawn back to her lover’s face, the easy smile that so often graced his pulchritudinous features. More and more often, she found that face on her mind, even in idle moments where she wasn’t thinking of much else. The timbre of his laugh, the resonance of his voice, these too often filled her subconscious; and looking up at him as the sunlight illuminated his profile, it was then she knew for sure that she was in love.
Nia was a woman who fell in and out of love like the waxing and waning of the moon, but with Saro, it seemed different. This wasn’t some surface-level affection that would dissipate in a week—this was something distinct, something profound. The thought of him leaving her behind stung more than it would have even a few days ago, and she found that was a pain she wasn’t willing to bear. If he asked her to sail away with him like he had so many times before, now she wasn’t so sure that she would refuse him.
Arm linked with his, she stopped in a secluded alcove of the marketplace and took both his hands. Intertwining their fingers, she smiled up at him before pulling him in for a lingering kiss. Lips brushing over his once, twice, thrice, she pulled back at last with a gentle sigh. Tugging at his arms to pull them around her waist, she rested her head against his chest and simply listened to the beat of his heart for a few long moments.
“Saro,” she finally said, her own heart picking up its pace as she tilted her head back to look at him. “Thank you for all of this, truly. I know it probably doesn’t mean much to you, but it certainly does to me. No one’s ever done anything like this for me before.”
Freeing one of her hands, her palm rested against his face as her gaze met his. “I think…” Trailing off for a moment as she bit her lip, she gathered her courage and I went on, “I think I’m in love with you.”

Saro had no idea what Nia was doing when she pulled him aside suddenly and decided to hold his hands and kiss him, but he wasn’t complaining. He did particularly enjoy her company, and while he didn’t think that he would leave the sailing life for her completely, for the moment at least he was enamoured by her as a lover.
He kissed her back as their lips met, chuckling a little, he was about to ask her what had suddenly brought this about, but before he could say anything, she was speaking.
“You don’t have to thank me.” He started saying, but then she was speaking again and he fell silent so that she could say what was on her mind. He laughed a little, not a mocking sound, but one of joy. He had thought the feeling mutual between the two of them, though it had been previously unsaid. He wasn’t a man who fell in love easily, not truly, though he had stated it a few times to previous lovers just to get himself further with them.
There had only been one person in the past that he had said he loved and truly meant it, and he had his heart broken horribly for it. But with Nia, he felt at least some semblance of what he had felt for Adre, and perhaps with time he could feel that again with Nia. Except with Adre, they had at least both been sailors, and both understood the love of the sea. Nia couldn’t possibly understand the call of the waves.
Saro reached forward and tucked some loose strands of her hair behind her ear and then trailed his fingers over her cheek like he had many times before, pausing for a moment just to gaze at her.
“I don’t have to think, I know I love you, Nia.” He said simply, speaking without hesitation. He gave her a grin.
“You’re an amazing person, and so beautiful and strong.” He said simply, shrugging a little.
“I love you unconditionally.” He stated again, grinning and leaning down to press a kiss to her lips.
“What made you think to say it? Was it the trip? The romance of sailing down the Nile?” He asked curiously, wondering if she would have said it if they had remained in Cairo instead of taking this trip. Perhaps she was just caught up in the moment, not that it mattered. He had said the words and meant them, whether it was truthful on her end or not.
He reached forward and touched the lions head necklace that he had given her the first day they met, she wore it each time he had seen her, and it made him a little happy. At first it had been a small charm, insignificant and with no meaning, an attempt to sleep with her. Now, things had gone further than that, and real feelings were involved, and the golden lion meant something a little more. At least to Saro, perhaps he was thinking too much about it, perhaps it meant nothing to her.

Her heart soared to hear the words uttered in return, Nia’s face practically splitting in two with the force of her smile. A hopeless romantic to her very core, nearly everything about Saro kept her utterly entranced. His sense of adventure, his flowery words, his sculpted body… the young noblewoman shivered in delight. How could she have gotten so lucky?
Fingers twined in his, Nia practically melted as he returned her kisses, a warm joy bubbling in her center. Of course, every sign pointed to him returning her feelings, but there was always that nervousness, that anxiety in baring one’s heart. It seemed this time, at least, she had made the right choice.
When he questioned her as to why she chose to say it now, she chuckled and shrugged. “All of that, I suppose,” she mused in response, arms wrapping around his waist to pull herself in closer. A light trail of kisses dusted along his collarbone, stopping at his neck before she went on, “But mostly… it’s knowing that I matter. That you care enough to take me places, give me little adventures, show me off… I… how can one really explain what makes them fall in love? I think that’s a question for greater minds than mine.” She laughed, resuming her trail of kisses until they stopped at his lips. Lingering there for several long moments, she pulled back with a breathless laugh. While she’d anticipated this trip to Alexandria would be a pleasant diversion, of course, she hadn’t expected this.
Saro’s fingertip touched the necklace he gave her, Nia’s smile deepening in response. Her hand reached up to clasp his, sandwiching the necklace between their palms. While she had known his initial gift was meant to get her to spread her legs, it meant something more now. Especially now. A sweet lover’s token, and one she was sure to cherish for a long time to come.
Or so she hoped.
There was a different sort of heat in her gaze now as she looked up at him, the smirk on her face quickly turning suggestive. Hand trailing up his back, it curled casually into his hair, pulling his face down to hers in a more urgent sort of kiss. Tongue teasing against his, she pulled back only enough to whisper, “Surely, we needn’t leave any time soon.” Her eyes sparkled with mischievous intent, the hand on the necklace instead reaching up to cup his cheek. “How adventurous are you feeling, my darling?”

The moment between them was sweet, though it was one that Saro was well versed in. She was not the first woman that he had this moment with, nor was she the first one that he had said he loved. Did he mean it more with her than he had with any of the other women? Yes, definitely. But that did not change who Saro was deep down. He was a pirate, he belonged to the sea, and when his crew was ready to move on from Egypt, he would follow and she would be another woman in his past, and he would be another man in hers. He had no idea if she truly thought he would be staying there with her permanently, but he thought there had to be at least part of her that knew he was not destined to stay with her.
What ever she thought about the permanence of their relationship, he would not ruin the moment, nor did he see a reason to hurt her right now to make sure she understood that he did not intend to stay forever. They might as well both enjoy their time together, how ever long it actually lasted.
Her tone suggested that her mood had shifted along with the conversation and admittance of love, and Saro was definitely not against what her words and her voice were suggesting to him. There was a bit of a grin on his face when she asked how adventurous he was feeling.
“Very.” He replied simply. You would be hard pressed to find something that Saro wouldn’t do. He thought what ever she had in mind wouldn’t compare to some of the wild things that he had done in the past.
He took her hand, having an idea what she was likely thinking about, and lead her away from the spot that they had stood and declared their love.
The two of them disappeared into the crowd to go and get into the sort of trouble that two young lovers were the best at getting into, the sort of trouble that her parents would be very, very angry about.
They spent the rest of the day in the city, exploring each other as much as they did Alexandria, before they would return to Cairo, sailing the Nile during the sunset, both of them content from the day together, and both choosing to ignore the impending expiry date on their relationship for the moment.
