Ladies and gents and everyone in between, we have an update to our Rules section of the Encyclopedia! Please note that we have several shifts in how we measure activity here on Aeipathy as well as the activities required for the creation of new characters. While these can all be found in full detail in our Guidelines and Rules, you can also read below for the general gist written in a more casual tone <3
Update #1: New Character Requirements
This rule has changed a few times over the history of Aeipathy's 17 month life span. Please bear with us as we continue to tweak and work to ensure that the rule is the best balance it can be between ensuring activity and integration for all characters without being too significant a hindrance to our members. We want to strike the right chord that allows us to have as many characters as active as possible and as many members engaged and creating as many characters (that they want to) as possible. Here is the new rule, copied from our Guidelines and Rules...
When creating new characters, Aeipathy is fairly restriction free. We hold no time limits, accumulative counts or gender ratio restrictions. Our only ask is that your current characters have each acquired 30 IC posts and that they have contributed to our Events and/or Provincial Stories. A "contribution" must be the interact/connection with three different characters (ergo, you cannot post your character hidden in a corner - they must integrate). This can be an interaction with three different characters in one Event, or one character in each of three Events, or any such combination. Our only rule is that each character is different. These requirements are less daunting than they sound when our Event threads usually contain a large portion of our members' characters, including staff, all of whom are eager to help any member achieve their required contribution to unlock a new character. These requirements are in place on Aeipathy, not to make our members' lives difficult but to ensure that all current characters are active, with current storylines and multiple IC connections, ensuring that they will continue to be looked after as their member is excited for their shiny new character.
The 30 post requirement still stands, as does the three interactions in Events and Provincial Stories, however, we are now opening the field so that those three interactions can happen as three in one Event, or one in three different Events, two in one Event and one in a Story... whatever combination you like. The only rule is that those interactions have to be with three different characters - so you can't just rp with the same person in three different Events - and should be a potential plot connection. Talk to them, help them, rob them blind... whatever you want to do - but they have to interact with meaning. We're hoping that this will make this requirement significantly easier instead of three interactions needing to come from one single Event.
Update #2: No More Freebies
(Sorry, couldn't resist the gif).
Given how much easier the above rule has now become, and the fact that Africa is a well established Realm now, we are removing the rule of Freebies on the site. If you want a new character, you need to meet requirements. Simple as that. To all those who have used Freebies in the past, no you are not about to lose your characters and no there is no fall out on this one. Just, from now onwards, no character will be accepted unless everyone's other characters are up to spec.
Update #3: No More Activity Checks
That's it. We're not doing any activity checks on Aeipathy ever again (I hope!). Instead, we're introducing a brand new and totally unique to Aeipathy activity system that should promote regular activity over bursts of posting whenever an activity check deadline looms. This means that all those who are regularly active now have no checks or deadlines or requirement issues to meet. And only those who are routinely inactive for long periods of time need to be concerned. The new system will also be a promotional tool to get those inactive members back into activity, rather than simply cutting them off or allowing them to post to meet a check and then disappearing again. It will be a tool to force members to either get their character more involved, or drop the character in question. This means that if characters are dropped it only happens one or two at a time rather than a giant culling at the end of an activity check. Read below for more details on the new system...
Update #4: New Activity System
This is probably the biggest update in this announcement and is what I have been hinting at in previous broadcasts. We are introducing an on-going activity check system that will ensure that all active members never have to be concerned for an activity check and all those who have fallen into inactive habits will be given the help and push they may need to get back into the swing of things... It will also ensure that no character can be entirely absent for a maximum of two months before they are removed from the site and (if a wanted or canon character) put back up for grabs by a more active writer.
The following is a copy and paste from our Guidelines and Rules page on how this new system works...
-- All characters must post once per month. Given that our general request of activity is 2-3 posts per member, per week, this rule is far easier to achieve than it may seem. If members are keeping to the 2-3 posts on average per week recommendation then, unless they have more characters than is probably appropriate, they will hit this target without difficulty or effort.
-- At the end of each calendar month, all characters that have not posted once within that month will be placed on Probation. At the end of each month, the staff team check each character individually and check for their last IC post. If it was more than a month ago, that member is sent a private message (not made public) that the character is on Probation.
-- Characters on Probation must post four times in the next month's check. If a character has not posted for a whole month and is put on Probation, in order to get back out of said Probation, that character must post four IC posts within the next month. E.g. if they were placed on Probation at the end of October, they must post four IC posts before the end of November and the next check. This may seem harsh but this is, on average, still only one post per week, which is less than the 2-3 posts on average we ask of members. So, if you need to pay more attention to that one character, it will still leave you with time for others.
-- Why the Four-Post Rule? We have installed this four-post rule under the belief that an average one post per week on a character that has been entirely inactive for a month will help to: a) get the writer's muse for the character back into momentum, b) ensure a reward to the patient members waiting on this character in the form of more replies, and c) help to get the character more up to date and involved with the site again.
-- Staffers promise to Probation characters. When a character is put on Probation, the staff team commit to three things. One, the character will be linked in the #match-maker channel on our Discord server to two other members. Two, one of our staffers, moderators, managers or mentors will reach out with a plot proposal to the writer of the probation-ed character (this will be decided amongst the different staff teams and a character picked out who is most likely to be able to offer a genuine plot to the probation-ed character). Three, if there is not already an Event/Story that the character can easily become a part of, a new Event/Story will be created in the next broadcast that they can be involved in. This totals four plotting opportunities - two with members, one with a staffer, moderator, manager or mentor and one in an Event. Four opportunities for the four posts required. This is our staffer promise to our members.
-- Coming out of Probation If the character is used to make four IC posts that month, they immediately come back out of Probation and go back to their one post a month requirement for the following month. If they fail to meet the four-post Probation requirement, they are removed from the site entirely. If they are a canon or noble character, they are put back up as a wanted character.
This Activity system, while it has been thought through extensively, is new and will likely be open to tweaks in the future. However, I hope that people can see the above as an attempt to nip inactive characters in the bud, to ensure that all characters are active rather than singular characters being a writer's main focus and encourage more plotting with a more diverse range of the characters that we already have. Please also note that, in the worst possible activity scenarios, this system will mean that a character either only has one post per month or four posts every two months, else they are removed from play. It also means that we might possibly lose one or two characters every few months rather than a wodge of characters every four when we put out activity checks.
Please note that if characters are removed from play, this is not a reprimand upon the member who writes them. It is simply a forced suggestion that, if you are unable to post one post per month with this character minimum, then perhaps you have too many characters for yourself to handle, or you simply have characters that are now obsolete and potentially need to be killed off IC or removed OOC.
Conclusion
I hope that everyone can see the potential benefits to the above changes and that you're all eager to get stuck in with some posting. These changes are effective immediately, which means no applications will be accepted without current characters meeting new character requirements (no freebies will be accepted from this point onwards, regardless of whether the account has already been made), however, these changes may also mean that you now qualify for a new character already when you hadn't before. The new Activity System is now in play and the first check/sweep will happen on the 1st December 2019. Remember - if you are posting one or more post per month with each and every one of your characters, you have absolutely zip to worry about <3
Throw any questions you might have my way, guys! Happy to help and answer any queries regarding situations I haven't considered in the above changes.
Have fun posting, y'all!
