Ever since the new girl had joined the band, there had been controversy surrounding her place. On one hand, he trusted his group with his life, he had to to survive, and those who vouched for her skill had given him no reason for doubt. But on their arrival to Colchis, Somra had caused quite a stir with her behavior, and the introduction to the remainder of the group had left Nahash with concerns that needed to be addressed before she joined them on the mission that had brought them to Colchis.
Dressed simply in tunic and breeches for better movement, his hair was wrapped back out of his face and he was without the usual cloth he tied over his eye when going out into the city. Dusk had just started to fall across the lower levels when he found Somra in the house they had taken for their own. He hadn't spoken to her since the first warning he'd given, but in his discussion with Khanh, after her outburst in their arrival, it was time to see what she could do without putting it off any further. Knives were tucked about his person, though should she disappoint him he would not need any of them to finish this task.
"Somra. With me."
Nahash didn't wait for a reply, turning instead with a nod and moving to wait by the front door. Only once she had joined him did the thief leave the house, moving in silence through the streets toward the destination that he and Khanh had selected earlier in the day. She needed to prove her ability, and her loyalty, and in order to do so there was a test that he had contrived. If she could get in and out with something valuable, if she could show him the extent of her skills, it would give him more peace of mind. The way she'd introduced herself to the group hadn't been the most conventional, and in order for them to operate well, as a full faction of the Sariqas, they could not have any discord or weaknesses.
"Your skills, what would you say is your strongest?"

"Your skills, what would you say is your strongest?"
Somra wasn’t scared any more, though she kept her distance from Khanh as much as possible, more than anything she was feeling out of place and angry. Her thoughts had turned to leaving the group shortly after the whole situation had unfolded. She hadn’t expected them to be her best friends by any means, but she had expected them to at least show a little respect to her. She thought she had earned that much at least, helping Tiye get that valuable item in Egypt.
She was dressed in a plain black dress, something that you would easily see a commoner wearing for their day to day lives. She hated it, one of her favourite things was using her feminine charms to her advantage, and now she had been told not to wear those dresses. As much as she hated it, she wasn’t stupid enough to disobey the request. She had been quiet since the first night, only speaking when answering questions directed at her. She kept to herself, choosing not to have anything to do with any of them unless she was asked to do something.
She was sitting in a corner of the dusty house they had chosen to occupy, keeping to herself as she sewed quietly, making herself more clothing out of the muted fabric she had been able to locate. She needed to make her custom outfits in order to have her full range of movement, but all of her previous ones were in bright colours to draw attention to herself. Now she needed to recreate them in dull greys and blacks that would make people lose her in a crowd.
She jumped a little as she heard Nahash’s commanding voice and poked her finger with her sewing needle. She winced at the jab but didn’t make a sound, instead she rose from the floor and quickly put her things away. Her heart was racing, what could he want with her? She had a bad feeling about what ever was about to happen. She couldn’t remember the last time she was so thankful for the feeling of the metal against her hip where her dagger lay hidden under her dress.
She moved across the house, footsteps silent as she went to where Nahash waited for her. She didn’t say anything as he began to lead her, she followed a half step behind his own pace, walking beside him, ready to pull her dagger out and attempt to defend herself if it came to that. If his intention was to take her some where private and kill her, he would at least have a fight on his hands. He was much larger than her, but she was quick.
She was surprised as he spoke again, and she bit her tongue to keep from giving him a sarcastic reply. Did he not know what her skills were? She had thought they were all aware of what she could do.
“Acrobatics are my specialty.” She said simply. All the skills that came with being an acrobatic performer were her strongest, climbing, jumping, balance. There was hardly a thing she could not climb freely, unless it was completely smooth, but if it had any sort of hand or foothold, she would find it. It was a natural talent for her, but one that she had worked on perfecting for most of her life.

That she followed him silently and obediently was good, she was capable of learning those lessons at least. He waited until she fell in beside him, silent as they moved through the city in the falling night. Only when he finally felt they were free of any listening ears did he ask his question, her response had the corners of his lips twitching. She was trying, being polite and obedient enough for the time, but as he glanced back over to her he could almost see the prickle beneath her skin.
"Acrobatics cover a wide range."
If she was going to give simple responses he could do the same. Matching her tone and level. It was one of the best ways to connect with people he'd found, though with his looks he couldn't always blend in perfectly, if he mirrored the patterns of speech and tone of those he spoke to it was easier to connect and throw suspicion to the side. There was no guarantee it would work on her, but it was an effort he could make.
The building he'd chosen as target was in sight, half built into the rock of the mountain it looked difficult to get into, with windows shuttered against the chill of the evening as winter approached. It belong to a fairly wealthy merchant, but the lower half and store was not what Nahash had in mind. The sides of the building were not something that he could scale, even with the skills he'd cultivated over time. It required someone light and quick to scale the sides, and she would also have to open the window without alerting anyone around them of what was taking place.
"The merchant's wife has a necklace. An emerald piece. Bring it to me."

She shrugged as he said the word covered a lot of things. That was the point. She was skilled in all acrobatics, and completely confident in every single one of those skills.
Her reply was simple and to the point. “I know.”
She had no idea what his plan was, why he had called her of all people out into the night. She supposed it would be much like what Khanh had done the other day, he was probably trying to get something out of her, to test her skills for himself. She wondered if she would have to do this with every single person in the group. She thought that Tiye’s recommendation would have been enough for them to trust in her skills. Apparently that was not the case.
Much as she suspected, they approached a rather nice-looking house and he stopped, telling her what he wanted from the house. Not telling her. Demanding. Normally she would make some snide comment about how she didn’t take commands, and he would need to ask nicer if he wanted her to do it. But she didn’t dare say such things. Instead, much like she had when Khanh had told her to climb the cliff face the other day, she slipped her cloak off. The night air was cold, and she immediately felt the chill settling on her skin, but she paid it no mind. She did not need the cloak getting in her way.
She held the cloak out to Nahash, but instead of just expecting him to take it as she had with Khanh, she spoke softly.
“Please hold this, it will only make this harder for me if I wear it.” She said, waiting for him to agree to take it before she moved towards the building. Her footsteps made no noise, and she went around the side of the building, not dumb enough to try to climb in through the front where she could easily be seen from the street. She pressed herself up against the wall, with her back to it, and took a moment to listen for any movement coming from inside. She could hear someone on the lower floor, but they seemed to be alone. She stepped a little bit away from the building and looked up at it, planning her route up.
With that she found her first handhold, and scaling the building took no time at all. She slipped her small fingers between the small gap in the shutters, pulling one of them open slowly to make sure it didn’t make any noise. She paused for a second and listened, the person downstairs did not seem to take any notice of the intruder. She was gone from Nahash’s sight then, slipping in through the small gap of the partially open shutter.
Her entry was silent, and she took stock of the room. Where would she put her jewels if she was in this woman's shoes? She immediately spotted a small chest, making her way over to it, she carefully lifted the lid.
She spotted the emeralds that Nahash had demanded, carefully taking them from the jewelry, she also slipped a matching pair of emerald earrings from the chest, closing the lid, she carefully replaced it exactly where she had found it. It would take them awhile to discover anything was missing. She slipped the jewels into a small pouch, and then into one of her hidden pockets.
As quickly and quietly as she had entered, she left, closing the shutter behind her, she smoothly climbed down, nimbly jumping down from the last bit, she walked out of sight of the building and to Nahash.
Somra pulled part of her dress aside, revealing a little bit more of her thigh, she plucked the pouch from its pocket, let her dress fall back to the way it naturally fell, she handed the pouch to him without a word, taking her cloak to wrap back around herself in an attempt to warm up as she started shivering the slightest bit.

With Somra's response, Nahash gave a simple nod, watching as she removed layers that would make her motions more difficult and taking the pieces handed to him without complaint. He had to admit he was impressed with how unphased she seemed, both by the location and the request. Fading into the shadows of the alleyway near the house, he watched as she climbed quickly up the outside of the house and waited. If she succeeded in this and continued to improve, he could consider welcoming her as a fully fledged member of their band instead of a new outsider. Tiye could use a companion anyway, and women who looked like Somra were a good distraction.
Counting the time that she'd been gone and keeping a sharp eye on the house, he waited for any sign that she had been caught. Cacophony would mean she had failed, and he would slip into the night. Silence allowed him to remain until he saw the slim figure descending from the window once again. He waited until she was fully clear of the house before emerging from his shadow, draping her cloak over her shoulders and drawing up the hood without words. If anyone saw them now they had to imagine that they could be anything but thieves, and so he slipped an arm around her shoulders to guide her away and back on a weaving route to their home.
The pouch she handed him felt heavier than expected, but as he tucked it into his inner pocket, he could only imagine she'd felt the need to show off and take additional items. Only once they were well away from the house she had just robbed did he release his hold on her. Looking down with a small smile, he gave a nod of approval as he checked the contents of the pouch.
"You did well." Her success allowed his demeanor to change and the harsh stone exterior to fold slightly, trust established if not fully given over without reservation. "I will tell the others you are to be considered one of us." And if she somehow blew their cover or tried to flee, he would make sure her end was swift. Though it would be a pity to end something so lovely without a taste. He'd seen how attempts at seduction had gone though, and had no interest in wading in just yet. Perhaps if she showed interest that could change.

Somra didn’t protest as his arm went around her shoulders, not that protesting would do any good anyways, but at least with Nahash it simply felt like a touch meant to throw people off if they spotted them. If it had been Khanh, she likely would have been a lot more uncomfortable. She walked with him, leaning a little into his side, to make it look as if they were simply a couple out for an evening walk together, and not two thieves who had just pulled off a small job as a test. When they were far enough away, his arm moved from around her and she stood properly once more, walking at his side with just a bit of distance between them. She had to admit, his arm around her had actually felt kind of nice. She’d felt very alone since joining the group and Khanh treating her like a slave to be ordered around and abused at his whim. She was a little shocked at herself for feeling like that, she hadn’t noticed that feeling until now, but she kept it from showing on her face.
She perked up a little and looked over at him, unable to show the excitement in her eyes. He had said she was to be treated as one of them. Would this mean that she was going to stop being treated like she did not belong? Or would none of the group care what Nahash said in terms of how she was to be treated?
She hoped that his word would stand and she would finally feel like she belonged in the group.
She had a hundred things running through her head, wanted to shout and jump and celebrate her victory right then and there.
But she didn’t. Instead she bit her tongue and spoke two simple words, though she threw her gratitude and relief behind it, hoping he would catch her tone as she spoke.
“Thank you.”
Somra chewed on her bottom lip a little, there was a lot of feelings running through her, and a lot running through her mind, and she needed some time to work through it all, to take a few deep breaths and sort through her own emotions and thoughts.
“Do you need me further?” She asked simply, not meaning disrespect with it, just wondering if Nahash had more for her to do or if he was going to go off and do his own stuff. If he wished for her to remain in his company longer, she would do so. She didn’t mind his company, he was at least not cruel like Khanh, and her previous revelation about being lonlier than she realized was sort of weighing on her now.
But she would also understand if he was done with her for the day, he had his own things to deal with she was sure, he often seemed busy and was gone quite often, and she doubted one of his priorities was to spend time with the new recruit outside of the test she had already passed.

Her gratitude was met with a nod of his own, making a note to take Khanh aside specifically to ensure that she was left alone. If his second kept pushing her around and taunting and teasing her it would not inspire her trust and commitment. However embarrassing it might have been for her to reject him, it was not to cause any kind of rift in his tribe. While he had been suspicious and uncertain himself when she had first been brought to them, and he had to admit he had not been as gentle and welcoming of her as he could have been, so far Somra had done nothing but prove herself, and she had done this job to his satisfaction. As far as he was concerned, she was one of them and there would be no further question of it unless she gave cause.
The question made him wonder if she wanted to be excused because she feared him still or if she simply wished to be finished with her duties. He had no further tests for her, no additional orders to be passed on and so as they prepared to turn toward their hideaway after their zig zagging meander through the city Nahash gave a rare smile, one corner of his mouth turning up as he gave another nod. Whatever she wanted to do to celebrate, so long as it wasn't too loud or obnoxious, he had no reason to order her to stay.
"No, the rest of the night is your own."
Hesitating a moment, he looked her over again before moving for home and making his offer over his shoulder. "I was going to prepare some dinner. The others are doing what they wish tonight. If you care to join me you are welcome to, otherwise I shall see you in the morning." With that the leader slipped into the home that had been claimed as their own, leaving it to her to decide if she wanted to join him and follow, or leave and do for herself the rest of the evening.

She was surprised to see Nahash smile. It wasn’t something she thought he even did. Well, surely he smiled once in awhile, but it had still caught her a little off guard. She gave him a small, tentative smile in return, unsure what his thoughts were exactly. It sounded as if she had finally turned a corner, as if they would at least sort of start treating her like one of them instead of an outsider to be pushed around. She had thought upon proving herself in Egypt and joining the group, she would be treated as a member. But she had been very wrong. She hoped now that this would change as Nahash said it would.
She wasn’t sure if that was an offer that he wanted her to take up, to join him for his evening meal. But she thought it was perhaps better not to push her luck. Their interaction that day had gone well, and she wanted to leave it off there.
So instead of heading inside with him, she turned and began to make her way in the opposite direction, down towards the docks. She intended to go and climb the cliffs by the water, and spend her evening on her own, in her one true sanctuary, watching as the boats all pulled into the harbour for the night and the people far below went about their daily lives.
As she made her way down to the cliffs, her thoughts swirled. She felt a headache coming on, from the stresses of the day and the days previous to it, and she knew that the solitude of the cliff tops would be just what she needed. The only one likely to attempt to climb up to her on the top of the cliffs was Akhmad, though she didn’t worry too much about that as she made her way through the winding streets to her destination.
