Selene had been in Colchis for two days, and she was exhausted beyond belief. The first night, she’d barely slept as she tried to find some relief from her stress. But while she had given the baby to the castle staff for the first night, she felt a bit responsible for the babe. The last thing she wished was for her sister to be cross with her for not helping out.
So she’d taken the baby after her ride that morning, heart still heavy from her run in with Vangelis.
There was something about a new baby that was oddly comforting. For being born as violently as she was (at least it felt violent to her), she really had a sweet demeanor. Happy to suck on her fists while Selene bounced her in her arms, the princess was an easy child. Nothing like Nana had been, that was for sure.
And there was something wholly calming about her presence. Even though she came into the word with so much… disappointment, she was a quiet and curious child. And Selene was certain that once Olympia and Stephanos worked out their issues, the sweet little princess would be doted upon by both.
But, for now, Selene was content to hold her. In the chaos, she felt calmer with her in her arms. If only her parents were able to see that, too.
Freshly fed (for the Queen was at least able to nurse the baby), Selene was giving the little princess a tour of the manor that she’d become so familiar with. She was telling her stories she would never remember, sharing secrets that she wished to tell a trusted friend. And the chatty princess seemed to answer her back.
The timing was all too perfect, for as she was telling the little one about how she first found herself in the Kotas Manor, she spotted Zanon-- the topic of her story. She gave a soft laugh, happily approaching him. “Good afternoon Prince Zanon.” She gave him a respectable curtsy and a smile. “I was just telling the princess the story of how we met.”
He may have been in mourning, but Selene had quickly discovered that the princess was good at lifting most moods. Perhap he would wish for a bit of a distraction from his grief.

There were dangers around every corner, and he couldn't find a place to hide from them all. With his wife's family inching closer to the crown through his son, and the new babe that she believed grew within her, he was desperate for his brother to wed and have children of his own. If given the chance, he would have abdicated his position within the royal family in favor of Yiannis and Silas. It was only the Kotas sense of duty that kept him from doing such a thing as his paranoia grew daily. His father's death on the shores of a Thanasi province was very hard to look over as an accident.
Northern arrows. Barbed tips. Those weren't hard to mimic. Any craftsman could be hired to recreate an old veteran's trophy, and with time and a decent enough marksman the boat could have been marred by a Greek soldier instead of a barbarian. Nethis wouldn't have any difficulty sinking that low if anything he'd learned about the woman held true, and certainly both of her sleazy brothers would do whatever their mother-sister told them to do.
Zanon was shaken from his wanderings by a voice that echoed of the past to a far happier time. When his brother had been wounded but well and recovering an a beautiful Taengean had come to stay. While the sight of her always drew a desire, he wanted nothing more than for Selene of Leventi to finally break the iron walls Vangelis kept around himself and become the new Queen of Colchis. Her mother had been fertile with five children, and though they were all girls, the Kotas majority was overwhelmingly of the male variety. So, all would be well. They simply needed to wed. And soon.
"Ah, Lady Selene."
Smiling felt odd, like it was something his face couldn't do properly anymore. His expression had been nothing but a serious frown for what felt like months.
"I hope you are leaving her highness with only the best impressions of myself, and Colchis."

Zanon looked exhausted, but it was to be expected with the weight that had been so firmly placed on his shoulders. And he didn’t even realize that he’d been King, for all of a few hours while Vangelis had abdicated the throne to assist her in her need to free her sister and brother in law. Had he known, she was sure that he would have been even more tired. But his brother had returned, had taken the crown, and now Zanon could simply mourn his father and try to come to terms with being a crowned prince instead of just a prince. And still, the man looked like he could use a week of uninterrupted sleep to look like the dashing man he’d been all those weeks ago.
Her heart ached for him.
”It’s not often one finds herself kidnapped by a dashing prince as a rouse to tease his gravely injured sibling.” Her voice was light, her tone making it obvious that she’d really taken no offense to his actions that day. ”Although I wonder just how Vang decided to get retribution for your joke.”
The baby let out a little giggle, unsure of the noise she was making. And Selene let out a small squeal of excitement. ”I know! Prince Zanon of Kotas is completely scandalous. Although I must confess, dear niece, that I started the scandal by writing to the Queen herself. And that’s how this whole mess got started in the first place.”
The mood was light, for she wanted him to forget, just for a moment, that he was in mourning.
”How are you fairing, my lord?”

”How are you fairing, my lord?”
Tired eyes crinkled up in amusement as she accused him of kidnapping, recalling back to a time when he was far more energized and eager to play. It seemed a lifetime since he had been able to relax and take a moment to breathe. Seeing Selene again was like a gust of fresh sea air had come to lift him out of the depths of fear that had swallowed him.
"I believe kidnapping is the wrong word, my lady. I simply requested your presence to lift the spirits of my beloved brother."
Zanon chuckled wryly, this time the humor did not quite meet his eyes as she asked how he had gotten back at him for the jest. Vangelis was not the sort to seek retribution for that, especially when it seemed that Selene's presence had lifted him back to full health. There was however the continued bout of absences which left him to deal with the kingdom and everything that had come to pass in his brother's leave.
"By leaving me in charge of things in his stead. And being an unmarried king."
It was muttered under his breath, but it was no less true. As the baby gave a shriek he looked down to the little princess with a smile that finally reached the depths of his brown gaze, taking in the fuzz of darkening blonde hair and watery blue eyes that tried their hardest to focus. She was alert for being so young, and certainly vocal, different than Dion at that age when he had simply watched and listened with brown eyes that matched his own and seemed to take in everything all at once. Holding out his arms on instinct, he reached for the little princess with an ache in his heart he knew well.
"May I? It has been far too long since we have had a babe in our ranks."

It was impossible not to notice how the new crown prince was carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. Not only was he showing signs of physical exhaustion with the dark bags under his eyes and slumped shoulders, the emotional baggage was apparent in the lackluster gaze he wore. And it hurt Selene’s heart more than she could say, because this was not the man she knew. But who in this situation could be the same, so soon after?
There was a part of her that wanted to tell him everything, but what had happened had consequences. And she didn’t want to add to his stress. He didn’t need to know just how long he’d been King. It wouldn’t help him, and that was all she wanted to do. All she had been, since Vangelis had come to Taegnea, was a burden to the family. And she wanted to correct that. Maybe she could help. Maybe she could make a difference.
Maybe.
He seemed to relax a bit as soon as he realized who it was, and for that she was grateful. ”A request usually does not come with a guard to make sure one obeys, my lord.” Her eyes were bright, conveying that there was no ill-will at what had happened. Her time in Colchis had been some of her fondest moments in recent history, and part of that was due to the man in front of her. ”Any request that comes with a guard is not a request at all, little princess.” She was giggling as her niece seemed to shriek with joy, shoving her fist into her mouth to suck on her fingers.
She was all but happy to hand over the little princess for someone else to pull some joy from. ”Of course, my lord. Her manners are lacking, but she makes up for it in her beauty. I do hope you’ll forgive her for it.” Why did this feel so… normal? Suddenly, she could see herself pressing a boy into the arms of the man in front of her, dark hair of his father with the bright blue eyes of her own. Did the boy have his uncle’s nose? Her heart gripped with ache, able to see herself firmly in these halls, relying on the family within to raise her children with her and the head of the house. She went quiet for a moment, knowing that it was an impossibility.
She wanted nothing more than to be a part of the Kotas family, and yet there was nothing she could do about it. She would have to leave, to return to Taegnea and face the consequences of her actions. Just as quickly as her smile disappeared, it was back on her face, focusing on the present and not the unknown future. ”Your brother only ever speaks of his utmost faith in your ability in his stead.” She laid a hand on his forearm. ”And while I doubt he would ever speak poorly of you to anyone openly, I think it is important that you know how much he defends you. You are a good man, Zanon. And I am happy to have been kidnapped by you, to be able to spend that time with you and your family.”

"The guard was simply provided to make sure you arrived safely, my lady."
He spoke with a tone of mock offense though he was unable to keep the smile off his face the entire time. She was such a light, he truly could not wait until she was part of the family. If only there would be less stubbornness between the lot of them and perhaps after a while there would be a wedding to celebrate to help clear up the sadness of the funeral. The shriek of the baby pulled him from that line of thinking and he chuckled at Selene's reminder to the little one.
Holding his arms out eagerly, he smiled down at the little princess and his expression softened in a way it had not in a long while. From the first moment he'd become a father, he'd known it was something he enjoyed, longed for really. Raising Dion, watching him learn and grow, it had all been a blessing from the gods that he was more keen than ever to repeat. If all went well, one day soon he and Evras would have another little one to raise between them. Perhaps this time the gods would be kind and allow them another child.
Tisiphone looked up at him with a suspicious gaze, her little face twisting at his unfamiliar features and her fists waved about until he began to move, bouncing her as if he had never stopped holding babies in his life. It was so soothing, just watching her. For a baby so little she was startlingly pretty, and glancing back over to her aunt he had to wonder if perhaps the rumor of the Leventi women being blessed by Aphrodite was indeed as true as it appeared. The king and queen of Taengea would be blessed if all of their children appeared this lovely and bright.
"Vangelis is a good man. But misguided in that. I could never be half the king he will be."
It wasn't self-deprecating, Zanon knew as well as any that he could be a competent and decent king. He would simply follow the example of his father before him and do his best, but in his heart he knew that it would never be near the reign that his brother would have.
"I hope to see him settled soon, a wife and child would do him good."
Shooting a glance over to Selene that was far from subtle, Zanon grinned and returned his gaze to Tisiphone as she cried in protest. Bouncing once again, he made calming noises at her and then looked back to the Taengean woman with a thought lingering on the tip of his tongue.
"Is she promised to anyone yet?"

There was an attraction to Zanon, but not one that was sexual in any way. She found herself longing for every opportunity to be able to bring this lighter side out of the brother. She had noticed that it seemed to be a key trait in most second born sons to be fair less serious than their older brothers. Zacharias had been a serious man, one who would smile so rarely that Selene could only remember a handful of times she had seen it grace his face. Achilleas was similar, although he seemed to be able to find a bit of joy in her harmless flirtations. But Emilios and Stephanos were both lighthearted, easy to get a smile out of or to convince to do something scandalous.
Zanon had always felt similar. The difference with him, however, was the feeling of belonging that seemed to come with their conversations. It felt right to be teased by him, and to reciprocate the banter. He was handsome, sure, but what she felt for him was more like what a sister might feel for a brother. And it made her chest ache to think that it would probably never be a thing.
”The soothing dance of parenthood seems to be ingrained into the soul.” Commenting on the way he started swaying, Selene had noticed how most parents easily picked up the motion once a baby was back in their embrace. She remembered seeing her mother swaying in the kitchens, arms empty but needed to move. It had always made her wonder why it was a thing she did, and until Tisiphone, she had never done it herself. It wasn’t even her child and she still found herself doing as Zanon had done-- swaying to keep the baby happy.
She let her hands rest on her hips, giving him a sweet smile. ”You underestimate yourself, I think. You would be a good king. Maybe not like your brother, but then again, King Vangelis was born for this. Your rule would be different than his, sure.” Although she never hoped that happened, ”But you would make him and your father proud.” She had only met the late King a few times, but remembered the stoic way he handled everything, much like Vangelis. He was glad to see that Zanon was different, but still strong and respected. Staring at the child in his arms, she missed the pointed look in her direction.
Her eyes turned sad for a moment as she watched the baby she would have to leave, thinking of the woman who would end up Queen and would carry the children of King Vangelis. Faceless, and still she was jealous. Pushing down the feelings, she looked up to him, trying to smile through the darker emotions that filled her mind. ”I am sure that, when the time is right, he will find a bride.” And she was certain that it wouldn’t be her.
”Is she…” The question lingered on her tongue, glad for the distraction from her dark thoughts’ ”Your Highness, she is barely a month old, born on a ship in between your lands and mine, to parents who had thought she would be a prince instead of a princess. When would there have been time to arrange a betrothal?”

"I had always hoped for a big family, many children running about to cause havoc as my brothers and I did. There was a time when we thought.."
Zanon's words faded as he thought of the so many miscarriages, the joy brought by the news of a new baby broken with the revelation that it would not be. How many nights he had gone to the temples to pray and beg every single god who might be of some help to let this one please stick. In his dreams he had pictured a family of dark haired bright eyed children, close in age and the best of friends. He'd wanted to name the next one for his mother, but after the third loss he stopped even considering names.
Shaking himself from his thoughts he turned back to Selene, her compliments of how he might be as a king were kind, but he once again had to shake his head at the idea. It was something he never hoped to pass, content to be a second son and counselor to the rightful king instead.
"You are too kind my lady, and I think perhaps too unaware of your role in this new reign." His brother's feelings for the woman were obvious to Zanon, he'd spent a lifetime trying to decipher Vangelis' moods and there was no way he was mistaking the way he spoke to and spent time with the Lady Selene. Chuckling at the surprise in her tone at his question, he shifted the baby to look at her a bit more in depth before turning back to his companion.
"I was only thinking, if she was not promised, a princess deserves a princess' life even if her parents are not currently on the throne. My son is unmatched, and though he may never hold a throne himself, she would be given the comforts and title she ought to have. Something to consider."

She only slightly knew of the struggle of Zanon and Evras to have children, not knowing the number of losses but only the toll it had taken on their marriage. But from the way he trailed off, it was obvious to her that they had tried for longer than she could have even imagined. How it must have been for them to get their hopes up for a pregnancy only to have it shattered by the reality of losing the child. Her heart ached for the man who was quickly becoming a friend. She wanted to reach out to him, to offer him a kind touch. Instead, she was quiet in respect for the dead, and made a mental note to offer them up in her prayers. Evras was not too old to not be able to carry more children.
Perhaps the Gods would smile on them yet.
His face turned in a way that she couldn’t quite understand the look in his eyes. She wanted to know what he meant by his comment, but she felt clueless as to the direction he was going. Her rule in this reign would be that of a friend, and she was certain that would be the case. Vangelis hadn’t given her any indication of anything more, and with the growing tension in the kingdom, she doubted marriage was even on his mind at this moment. Perhaps, when he returned, he would entertain the idea. But she was fairly certain that she was not anywhere in his line of sight as bride. She said nothing more on the matter, not wanting to possibly get her hopes up to only have them come crashing down.
She was already struggling to protect her heart from the Kotas clan. Zanon was only making it worse.
She smiled at the little princess, lifting her shoulders in a shrug. ”I do not believe I have the right person to have this conversation with. However, I will certainly argue in favor of the match, should you need someone on your side.” The age difference in the pair would certainly be a bit of concern, but it was not unheard of. And the idea of her little niece living a life of comfort as a true princess would make her happier. ”You are right-- she does deserve it. With the rough entrance into the world, I want nothing but an easy life for her for the rest of her days.”
Her focus moved back to Zanon, a hand reaching out to touch his forearm. ”I am sorry for the loss of your father. I wish I would have gotten the chance to meet him. He raised fine sons.” It felt like a strong compliment to give.

"Then perhaps when the time is right, after mourning is passed. I shall speak to her parents and see if my wife is amenable. I can only imagine she would want to help, or steal the princess for our own. We've wanted a daughter for years."
As if to prove his point, the little princess flailed both hands at him until she caught hold of a finger, trying to bring it to her mouth. There was a wrinkled look of rage on her face when she realized it was not providing the food she sought, and Zanon couldn't help but laugh as she gave an irritated cry. He'd forgotten how often newborns had to eat, and his heart went out to the queen who did not have the full staff to attend to her that she had no doubt expected. Though she did at least have her wonderfully attentive sister by her side.
He wondered how much longer Vangelis would drag his feet, no doubt the funeral of their father and his coronation would have to come first, but what better to bring joy back to the people of Colchis than by giving them a new queen. Keeping his mouth shut on the matter just in case he was misreading the emotions his brother seemingly had for the woman, though if Vangelis' feelings for Selene were not love he wasn't entirely sure his brother was capable of the emotion, he simply smiled. An easy life they would give the princess, especially if her aunt was to be queen.
The condolences offered shifted the mood, and his smile faded again, even as she touched his forearm. If his father had met Selene, he had no doubt that Tython would have joined with Zanon in his determination that she should be matched with his eldest brother. It still hardly felt real that he would not be coming back, that his ship would not be sighted a few days from now and he would be returning victorious as always. With a shake of his head, the crown prince lifted his gaze to hers and gave a small sad smile.
"Thank you, Selene. I believe he would very much have liked to meet you as well. We shall miss him."

There had been an immediate appreciation for him, for his sweetness and demeanor. Selene had always been drawn to Zanon, simply because of the platonic attraction that bubbled below the surface. Their friendship was easy, his joy in teasing and life one that was fairly aligned with her own. He was strong and determined, but didn’t see his emotions as a weakness. And while Vangelis had taught her to control her emotions, his brother had shown her that she could still have them as well. It was a balancing act, one that she knew the brothers would be happy to know that she was taking it to heart.
That fact that he both wished for a daughter and cared for the little stranger in his arms meant the world to her. It was a testament to his character and she found herself all the more drawn to him. To her, at least, he was a good man. Ignoring the rumors that seemed to follow him wherever he went, her own judgments on the man were set in stone.
“There has been far too much sadness in this world right now. But the next generation of leaders does give me hope of prosperity.” The princess was starting to get more frustrated with the lack of food, turning towards Selene for further comfort. While she was not able to provide milk for the babe, she could offer her petite finger, which would allow the princess to suckle in comfort. Stepping up to the pair, she turned her pinky upright and allowed the princess to use it. She was not so hungry that she would need to be fed, but it would only keep her calm for so long.
Looking up at him, as close as they were, her neck angled upward, Selene smiled, “He leaves behind a legacy. That alone should bring those who loved him comfort. I doubt he will be forgotten any time soon.” Leaning in, she pressed a kiss to her temple, still attached to her. “Perhaps it's best that I find my sister so that the babe can eat.” She said, a little hesitant to take the baby from him. “You may enjoy the company of your future daughter-in-law another time.” Her smile was playful, but it always seemed to be with Zanon.

Selene's easy way with the baby and her obvious attachment was only lifting her marks higher in his book. Colchis needed another queen with the ability to be strong, but show her softer side. With Vangelis as a king of stone, Selene would be a queen of light, softly guiding and nurturing the people of the land and taking the edge off of the firm strength his brother held. It would be a union that would bring Colchis into a golden age, of that he was sure. With the two of them at the helm he would be a happy advisor indeed, anticipating a time of peace with a queen who could charm anyone and a king who could destroy anyone who was not won over by her.
Passing the baby back to her aunt, Zanon leaned down to press a kiss to the little forehead before straightening. He would have to speak to his wife about securing the girl's future, now that he'd held her and considered the thought it seemed the best course of action as long as there was no throne for her parents to reclaim. He would let no suffering come to Tisiphone so long as he was living, and to have her matched and raised with Dion seemed the most obvious solution, especially with her aunt on the throne of Colchis to raise and guide her as well.
"Of course. See to it that her highness is well tended to, I shall speak to Evras, and my brother in due time. If you would mention it to their majesties as well."
He gave a bow and considered striding away, but there was a tug at his heart still as if leaving the baby even in such doting arms was a difficult departure. He longed for another child so much more than he had realized now seeing her here. A daughter or another son to fill their days. He had always enjoyed being a father, it brought out the best in him and helped him avoid the darkness that could call when he wasn't paying attention. In the past it had been necessary to close off his heart, not get his hopes up or get attached to the idea of a child being carried by his wife. Not after the first two miscarriages. He could only pray now that this one was safe, now that his guard was so thoroughly demolished.
With a kiss to Selene's cheek, he smiled and finally tore himself away, heading back to the rooms he shared with Evras to check on her and see if there was anything he could do to make her pregnancy more bearable.
