The Provinces

The land of Ire (as the territories of Athenia are collectively known) is a large piece of the mainland, that stretches out as three distinct fingers into the Aegean sea, creating the two main harbours of Athenia, plus the southern most coast. In land, Athenia stretches out into Europe, encapsulating its royal provincial lands.

Located in the exact centre of the Kingdom of Athenia is the province of Aetaea, a colony of forest dwellers who have utilised their lush surroundings to their advantage. Royal and noble caravans alike visit the province’s well known hunting grounds, and it has even been rumoured that Artemis and her hunters can often be seen on midnight hunts, silver accents glinting under the celestial bodies.

Neighbouring Aetaea, the province has a mixed landscape. To the north, on which it borders Aetaea, the lands are densely populated with tall trees. Unlike its neighbour, however, a majority of those residing in Aetola situate themselves in between the forests and the mountains, located on the southern portion. It is often, however, that the province is divided, and whispers talk about a possible splitting of the province due to such vast differences in ecosystems...

A city of gold. That is what Arcasis is known as, mostly for the fields upon fields of golden grain that glint in the sun’s rays both at sunrise and sunset. The harvest is not, however, the only thing plentiful in the province. By far the most populated in all of Athenia, Arcasis is said to be a dreamer’s paradise. There are things to do at all hours of the night. Opportunity lurks around each and every corner, and it is said that no one departs Arcasis without fulfilling their destiny.

A mix between laid back and talented, Arcana is a coastal town filled with abundant catch in its seas, and very proficient ship-makers. Shipyards dot the edges of the cobblestoned path by the sea. Located on the furthest end of the town stands a strong fortress built to house the Princess whenever she visits her barony, and a training ground for the White Shields, who guard the province.

An isolated province standing on the furthest end of Athenia, Attia has traditional architecture that stands out amongst its infrastructure, and healthy mountains that produces an abundance of fruits, vegetables and flowers. The best healers in Athenia are known to originate from this province.

At the province’s centre, a large garden surrounds the baron’s manor. In it lies the most prized fruits in all of Greece itself, only available for consumption if one has the right connections - Or the right price paid. Said to be blessed years ago by Demeter herself, Attictris receives multiple bountiful harvest each and every year without fail since its inception. Among the most peaceful people in the land, the residents of Attictris are as sweet as the fruit and wine they produce, and are known to be light of heart and merry.

A moderately large province in Athenia, Boetris is famous for the large Iquitos River that runs right through the province, enabling the people of Boetris to travel from one end to the other of the province purely by boat. The richness of nature within this province also meant that the ceramics and textiles produced are uniquely special, using the motives of life in their province as inspiration for the patterns.

Like the province itself, the people of Chacris only have one focus and one alone: Profits. Home to some of the most frugal and stingy in all of Greece, nearly all of the people of the province work in the mines. Composed almost entirely of caves, Chacris’ founding colony retreated into the complex underground tunnels. Nearly impossible to navigate if not native, many traders and other foreigners have been forever lost in the Chacris labyrinth. Overall, the landlocked, predominately underground province is tolerated by the other cities of Athenia due to its sole export.

Chacris

A mountainous region, Chaopian's are perhaps the fittest in Athenia. A slice of paradise away from the main city, the small province is one of the coldest in winter months due to the altitude it is situated in. Many escape here for a reprieve from the heat during summer months. Families in Chaopia are farmers by heritage, and harvest wonderful produce that is sent right to the royal family for their meals.

Walking around Corinth is like a fairytale - with a beautiful ancient castle that somehow was saved from the harsh fingers of time over the years, Corinth's architecture is connected by various cobbled lanes that lend a romantic air to the province. It also has a lively nightlife that attracts people from all over the kingdom, with notoriously friendly locals who will make your day.

Corinth

A town at the foot of the mountain, Doloria is a quite and sleepy town for most of the year, and usually serves as a midpoint for people travelling to either Chaopia and Corinth. With rocky outcrops and barren lands, Doloria's only possible export is stone, leaving them with little to survive on.

A little town tucked away in Athenia, the province has vast rolling hills filled with grass, perfect for the cattle that they farm for one purpose only - leather. Compared to Arcana, this province isn't as busy despite being a coastal town as well, however Elierea is famous for being right smack in the middle of the annual migratory route for whales during late autumn.

Elierea

The younger sister of Elierea, Elisaea is a smaller province connected to Elierea. Upon entering the province, you would be greeted with large kilns erected, where most of the people in the province work at everyday. A province which is warm regardless of which direction you go, one would always hear the burning of the fire and the humming of its people as they work, a general light-hearted tone that seeps throughout the province.

Located in one of the most dangerous waters in Athenia, the people of Epistis are tough and courageous, unafraid of the shark infested waters that they live in. A province that is surprisingly bland and tasteless as compared to the rest of the kingdom, Epistis does not have much to speak of in terms of infrastructure or architecture, neither does it have much personality for a province.

Famous for producing quality sailing materials, it is of no surprise that this seaside port town of Eubois has many fine sailors in its midst. At any one time, they would have an array of ships sailing either in or out of the Eubois port, and what had started as a small fishing village, is now home to sun-kissed coves and pebbled beaches.

A landlocked province, Haephtys lacks the development of many rivalling provinces in its proximity. However, it is able to produce some of the most lavish of goods, often ending up sported by royalty and nobility, as well as their armies. The Crimson Blades may have a smaller population to select warriors from than most, but they are known to be one of the most dedicated and vicious groups of all in the kingdom.

Art, food, and wine - that's what Illoclis is about, in whichever order you prefer. Heart-stoppingly beautiful with terrains covered in wheat that is as golden as the eye can see when harvest time grows near, Illoclis is a landlocked province that somehow still has an abundant water source throughout its province.

Housing one of the most stunning waterfall in all of Athenia, Laconis can be considered the neighbouring province to Corinth, although in truth, they are situated below. The temperature is slightly warmer compared to Corinth, but still pretty chilly. The chilly winds enable the people of Laconis to plant fruits of a different kind compared to the lowlands, which are sweet and juicy.

Laconis

A small, sleepy fishing village, Loclis's fisherman are strong and courageous. While not as dangerous as the waters in Epistic, Loclis's location next to Elisaea puts it right in the middle of the whale's migration path - and the people of Loclis are not afraid to put that to good use. For the rest of the year, however, they are content with the shellfish that they have in abundance in their waters.

Up until very recently the poorest and most backwards of the Stravos baronies, Lyncestia saw its fortunes unexpectedly improve as it came under the management of Lord Elias of Stravos. While not quite remarked for its fertile lands or bountiful grounds, Lyncestia does, however, boast a significant amount of protected coves and easily-defensible bays which constitute the ideal setting for ship-building sites. It was through this route that the Stravos heir chose to develop his barony, turning the province into a hub of the Stravos naval industry, ruled from its blood-red castle on the cliffs.

Classy and proud, the province is probably one of the richest, with many nobles aiming to obtain land within the province to live among the rich and mighty. The streets of Magnestis are always busy, for many merchants find it the most lucrative location to sell their goods. It isn't odd to see gold-plated chariots on the streets, while the coastal walk by the edge of the province serves up the freshest seafood you'll ever find in the kingdom.

With the province producing wine itself, it isn't surprising that many who visit this province often end up drunk or sprawled by the side of the streets, regardless of the time of the day. Life in Mesnia is unpredictable, however, with its a prevalent sense of unease as they have managed to get their hands on opium and other herbs that - rumour has it - induces enticing visions.

Mesnia

With a major export of alcoholic goods, the province is known to be home to some of the "freer spirited" in the kingdom. The people of Messaly are rumoured to all be drunkards, with loose men and even looser women. However, despite the reputation of constant celebrations, they manage to be one of the most successful provinces in the kingdom, standing among the wealthiest in all of Greece. The atmosphere is warm, and many often joke that the province should belong to Taengea.

A port town that was once proliferate and abundant, now a sense of danger hangs around the province ever since pirates began to favour this destination for their ships to come in. The province has high risks for violence, with the locals of the province scurrying away in fear of any unfamiliar faces, for fear of being taken away to be part of the slave trade by the pirates. There have been few instances to get rid of the pirates from the province, however, none have been successful. The fruit farms while once successful, are now under the control of the pirates who undercut the farmers in the province, to take their produce for themselves.

Bumpy with all of its hills, Piessis makes an excellent herding province. In a recent census, it was found that there are more sheep in the land than people who reside in it. Most residents find work in the textile industry or aiding the militia. While many would believe the countryside-esque province to be peaceful in nature, with a lackadaisical landscape and serene pastures, Piessis is one of the most violent places in all of Athenia, and its militia is second to none.

The small town of Thesnia prides itself on a very 'hands-on' approach when it comes to dealing with their livestock and produce. The locals are humble but proud of their work, and there is a beautiful sense of satisfaction and home every year during the birthing season of their livestock. Many have chosen this small landlocked town as a retirement home as they grow older, resulting in Thesnia having a very high ratio of older residents to young ones, making it difficult for farmers to find young help.
